Resistance: Barefoot Path
Gianin Conrad respects space and collaborates with it. For him, every place, every space, is a partner that seeks to be integrated into a total work of art through installations, objects, and performances. At the same time, it is also his ambitious goal to lead his audience into new realms, to challenge their accustomed viewing and reading patterns, and to surprise them.
For his installation «Barfussweg», Conrad takes the existing barefoot path in the garden of Hotel Promenade and expands it with a visual and intellectual component. The starting point is the barefoot path, which invites one to feel resistance with one's feet. Conrad expands upon this resistance both visually and metaphorically. The installation, as well as the garden with its natural elements, is transformed into a kind of Zen garden of bioelectrical impulses.
The tapes of electric fences are critical tools that raise questions about how we see and perceive, and how space can be used, appropriated, and experienced in its social and physical nature. A walkable structure emerges, composed of fence and line, object and pattern, electrical tension and a visible narrative. In doing so, Conrad blends nature with the artificial and the artistic. In his works, the definition of a work of art is not concrete; the spatial boundaries—where it begins and where it ends spatially and conceptually—are fluid. The question of whether a work is still in the process of creation or has already completed its production process often cannot be answered, as the procedural boundaries are also fluid.
