The historic Grandhotel Giessbach, located at the eponymous Giessbach Falls, whose waters spectacularly plunge into Lake Brienz, is a world unto itself. Surrounded by impressive nature, this Belle Époque hotel amazes with its idyllic location and a garden featuring over 100 historic ornamental plants and vegetable varieties.
Revived: The former park of the Grandhotel Giessbach was brought back to life in 2014, and starting in 2019, the historic vegetable garden began to be repurposed. Drawing from the collection of the ProSpecieRara Foundation, the garden enchants with a comprehensive collection of dahlias, hydrangeas, and astilbes.
With its opening in 1875, the Grandhotel was among the pioneers of Swiss tourism. Even today, the magnificent building exudes the opulent charm of that era, partly thanks to Europe's oldest operating funicular railway.
Despite its over 150-year history, the Grandhotel Giessbach is not gathering dust. Its 75 rooms, restaurants, and seminar rooms present themselves as modern, without ignoring their heritage. The same applies to the extensive grounds of the Giessbach Nature Park.
The non-profit foundation "Giessbach to the Swiss People" was established in 1983 by Franz Weber to save the historically valuable and worthy-of-protection Belle Époque Grandhotel from demolition and to preserve this beautiful piece of homeland above Lake Brienz as a common heritage for the Swiss people.
