Where wine grows right outside the hotel door

Arenenberg Weinbau

Vines, gardens, and sweeping views go hand in hand in many parts of Thurgau. At two garden hotels, this connection goes even further: Kartause Ittingen and Arenenberg grow their own grapes and produce wines that are inextricably linked to their location.

Wine with a view of the Untersee

Arenenberg’s grapes thrive on three hectares in a scenic location overlooking the Untersee. Viticulture has a long tradition here; even back in the days of the Bonaparte family, wine was produced on the Arenenberg estate.

Today, the estate’s own wine cellar produces Pinot Noir, cuvées, and various white wines. The viticulture combines traditional craftsmanship with modern, environmentally friendly farming practices.

Where monastic history meets viticulture

Viticulture has a history spanning centuries at Kartause Ittingen. Vines were cultivated and wine was produced here as far back as the Middle Ages. Today, various grape varieties grow on about six hectares surrounding the former monastery. The most important include Pinot Noir and Müller-Thurgau, complemented by other varieties such as Seyval Blanc, Sauvignon Blanc, and Johanniter.

The wine fits perfectly into the philosophy of the Kartause. Many of the ingredients for the kitchen come from the estate’s own farm and are processed directly on-site. The grapes also grow in the immediate vicinity. Those who wish to delve deeper into the world of Ittingen wine can taste various wines at the Mühle restaurant and learn more about their origins and the history of viticulture.

Whether taking a walk through the vineyards, enjoying a tasting, or sitting down for a meal, both garden hotels offer the chance to experience wine exactly where it is created. And perhaps a glass really does taste a little better when your gaze wanders over the very vines from which it came.
