Dance of Life II

Between everyday life and magic: Alois Hermann transforms fleeting moments of encounter into expressive sculptures.

The «Couples» series emerged during an extended period of work. Alois Hermann was inspired by subtle moments of encounter in the everyday lives of couples. These may seem insignificant, but for him, they are magical moments of happiness, like images that linger in the soul. Bringing a moment experienced as a gift into form is, for him, magic.

Nevertheless, this creative work with a chainsaw is always a challenge for Alois Hermann. With the double figures, the difficulty lies in carving two figures from a single piece of wood.

For the creation of the figures, he employs his skill and many years of experience in handling the chainsaw, while simultaneously surrendering to a higher power that gives his sculptures expression and brings them to life. For him, a figure is finished when it looks back at him.

These wooden sculptures serve as templates for the bronze castings. Through this transformation process – their conversion into bronze – the organic material wood is given almost unlimited longevity. This creates something very precious.

When Alois Hermann's creative expression can touch people at the core of their humanity, that is a great gift for him.
