Meditative Installation
From May to November, sculptor Renata Schalcher enchants the pleasure gardens of Palazzo Salis in Soglio, GR, with meditative installations made of metal and radiant mirrors.
The interplay of light is constantly in motion: sometimes it's scattered light in the trees, sometimes a strip of color appears on the ground for a short time. There's always something new to discover.
For decades, the foundation of her work has been Japanese calligraphy as a painting meditation – concentration combined with grinding ink, washing brushes, drinking tea, and Zen philosophy. The brushstrokes flow into free drawings with ink, graphite, charcoal, and oil sticks, and continue into the design of the sculptures.
The large-format paintings, the "color spaces," suggest that they are also objects in their own right. In three dimensions, the translucent color pigments on the individual layers radiate enormous intensity. What is always characteristic of spontaneous brush drawings, powerful metal sculptures, and richly colored paintings is a great sense of calm and aesthetics.
