Hotel Odelya is located in the heart of Basel, the city of culture, just a few steps from the historic Old Town.
The historic building blends the charm of bygone eras with contemporary hospitality. Its most famous resident was Hermann Hesse, who spent part of his childhood here in the former mission house – a fact commemorated today by the popular Hermann Hesse Room.
However, the true heart of the property is the garden. Basel's largest private park offers a green oasis away from the urban hustle and bustle. Numerous benches invite you to linger in a natural setting. Various herbs thrive in the natural garden, and the grounds evoke the feeling of a small city park belonging exclusively to guests. Seminars and meetings can even be spontaneously held under the approximately 150-year-old plane trees.
Sustainability is a core principle at Odelya. The original building from 1860 was already constructed by local craftsmen. The new building adheres to ecological criteria and is equipped with modern technology: a photovoltaic system, district heating, and heat recovery help keep energy consumption low. Local woods and natural, biodegradable paints were used.
The garden is also a habitat. Rare plants, herbs, and fruits grow here, while rhinoceros beetles, dragonflies, and numerous bird species find a protected haven right in the city. Those who wish to learn more about this urban nature can take part in guided tours through the garden and discover the diversity of this special Basel oasis.
