Nestled in the gentle hills of Mariastein, the Klosterhotel Kreuz offers soothing tranquility and space for reflection. Just a few minutes' walk from the monastery, the hotel harks back to its origins as a 17th-century pilgrim's hostel and today serves as a space for retreats, seminars, and special occasions.
Mariastein's history as a pilgrimage site dates back to a 14th-century legend, in which a shepherd boy was said to have been rescued after a fall. In gratitude, a chapel was built, attracting many pilgrims, which led the monastery to construct a hostel in 1654, later expanded after a fire. During the Kulturkampf, the monastery was secularized in 1874, the monks expelled, and the pilgrim house converted into a private inn. In 1935, Franciscan nuns took over the dilapidated building, renovated it, and reopened it as a pilgrim and spa house, before the abbey was officially re-established in 1971. Due to a lack of new recruits, Mariastein Monastery gradually took over responsibility from 1988 onwards and extensively renovated the spa house. The historic building fabric combines with simple, contemporary amenities, and the cozy Klosterschenke (monastery tavern) with park views invites guests to arrive and linger.
The hotel features an impressive medicinal and herb garden with around 200 plant species. It was established in the 1990s and has been diligently maintained and renewed since 2019. The Klosterhotel Kreuz combines nature, history, and hospitality to create a special place of tranquility – perfect for relaxing, recharging, and creative work.
