Hotel Bären Dürrenroth
In the village of Dürrenroth, the Romantik Hotel Bären combines baroque architecture with a mature garden space. History and the present coexist here. Franziska John's artworks enter into a quiet dialogue with the house and its surroundings.
Hotel Bären consists of three Emmental buildings from the late Baroque period. Together with the village church, they shape the townscape of Dürrenroth. The garden, with its oak portals, pond, and symmetrical flowerbeds, is part of the historical ensemble. It incorporates elements of a farmhouse garden and creates clear structures in the outdoor space. Architecture, garden, and village are closely interconnected. Paths lead between buildings, flowerbeds, and open areas. The place combines tradition with contemporary use. The kitchen also works with regional producers and herbs from its own garden.
Within this setting, three works by Franziska John interact with the space. The artist works with clay using a hollow building technique. Her figures range from small formats to life-sized sculptures. Humanity is central to her work. Facial expressions, gestures, and posture are precisely crafted. The figures capture everyday situations and preserve quiet, often fragile moments. Within the historic ensemble of the Bären, they appear present yet reserved. This creates an encounter between established structure and contemporary figure, allowing space for individual perception.
