Gustav Ammann's Historic Garden

Hotel FloraAlpina in Vitznau

On the shores of Lake Lucerne, Hotel FloraAlpina is opening a new, green chapter in Swiss garden culture.

The hotel's historic garden was designed by renowned landscape architect Gustav Ammann, one of the most influential Swiss garden architects of the 20th century. His signature style, characterized by naturalistic park designs in a residential garden style and groundbreaking projects for Swiss exhibitions, combines classic design elements with a natural-looking, understated maintenance. This very principle continues to shape the character of FloraAlpina to this day.

Amidst trees and blooming flowerbeds, along quiet natural stone paths, one can experience the garden's history as well as its timeless elegance. Small viewpoints offer glimpses of the glittering lake, while secluded seating areas invite visitors to pause and dream. Every step through the grounds reveals Ammann's philosophy: harmony between nature, architecture, and human use. Strolls offer tranquility and invite discovery of the natural aesthetic and subtle details of the historic design.

The past is also palpable. During the uncertain times of war, a large part of the property was used for growing vegetables and fruit. The goal was simple self-sufficiency – an independence that, to this day, lends the garden a subtle touch of modesty and pragmatism, embedded within its natural beauty.
